Law Enforcement
Personnel in law enforcement perform a variety of services to help protect the public and maintain order. They may perform a variety of functions, including: patrol a specific area; direct traffic; issue traffic summonses; investigate accidents; apprehend and arrest suspects, or serve legal processes of courts. Detectives and investigators gather facts and evidence of possible crimes.

Requirements vary, but in many cases, police agencies require a minimum of an associate degree for new employees. In Michigan, students must also complete police academy training to be eligible for employment as a police officer. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and able to meet rigorous physical and personal qualifications. Jackson College offers associate degree and certificate options in law enforcement. Field studies opportunities available.
Pay
Wages range from $35,000 to $71,700 annually, with median wages of $55,000 per year. In many positions, paid overtime is common.
Career Outlook
Job growth of about 7 percent is expected in coming years. Some turnover is expected with large number of current officers reaching retirement age.
